Types of Energy
10/31 - 11/4 This week, we will be talking about the different types of energy and how they are used. We will be reviewing what we already know and learning some new information as well. Students will be working with their groups to explore mechanical, electrical, light, thermal, and sound energy. We will also be reviewing potential and kinetic energy. We will go on a scavenger hunt to find examples of each type of energy, and we will take notes in our journals to help us remember what we learn. Students will work with their groups to complete several activities, and they will also have an assignment to complete individually on Friday. Students will also have vocabulary homework due on Thursday, 11/3. This homework will be assigned on Monday. The vocab list for this assignment can be found in the "Class Docs" section. Power up! In 5th grade, we are currently learning about the temperature points of water. We completed notes pages in our science journals about the boiling, freezing, and melting points of water and how it changes from one state to another. We talked about the root word "thermo-" and learned that "thermal energy" is related to heat and temperature. Students also completed a vocabulary assignment with these words before our Outdoor School trip.
After completing our ISN notes, we did a lab to explore the temperature points and characteristics of each. During the lab, we investigated the temperature points of different mystery solutions to determine which solution was pure water. Students did a great job working in groups and using their "science brains." Cool Links to Check Out:
