1/17 - 1/20 5th Grade is continuing their study of space science this week! We are learning about rotation and revolution of our planet and how these things work to create day and night, seasons, tides, and phases of the moon. There is no new vocabulary homework this week, but there will be a test sometime in the near future (after we are finished with our district benchmarks). For a list of standards and vocab words, check the post below!

1/4 - 1/13
We are starting one of my favorite topics this week - OUTER SPACE! For the next few weeks, we will be studying all things "out of this world!" This week, we will be reviewing what we already know about the planets and their characteristics. We will also be exploring the characteristics of the Earth, the Sun, and the moon. Students will be expected to compare and contrast physical characteristics of each. Students have vocabulary homework due on 1/6. Next week, we will be digging deeper into the activity of the Earth to learn about day, night, phases of the moon, and seasons. TEKS: 5.8 Earth and space. The student knows that there are recognizable patterns in the natural world and among the Sun, Earth, and Moon system. The student is expected to: (C) demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky; and (D) identify and compare the physical characteristics of the Sun, Earth, and Moon. Vocab:
Types of Energy
10/31 - 11/4 This week, we will be talking about the different types of energy and how they are used. We will be reviewing what we already know and learning some new information as well. Students will be working with their groups to explore mechanical, electrical, light, thermal, and sound energy. We will also be reviewing potential and kinetic energy. We will go on a scavenger hunt to find examples of each type of energy, and we will take notes in our journals to help us remember what we learn. Students will work with their groups to complete several activities, and they will also have an assignment to complete individually on Friday. Students will also have vocabulary homework due on Thursday, 11/3. This homework will be assigned on Monday. The vocab list for this assignment can be found in the "Class Docs" section. Power up! TEKS: 5.6A Vocab:
In 5th grade, we are currently learning about the temperature points of water. We completed notes pages in our science journals about the boiling, freezing, and melting points of water and how it changes from one state to another. We talked about the root word "thermo-" and learned that "thermal energy" is related to heat and temperature. Students also completed a vocabulary assignment with these words before our Outdoor School trip.
After completing our ISN notes, we did a lab to explore the temperature points and characteristics of each. During the lab, we investigated the temperature points of different mystery solutions to determine which solution was pure water. Students did a great job working in groups and using their "science brains." Cool Links to Check Out:
Vocab: boiling point, melting point, freezing point, evaporation, condensation, water vapor, physical state, thermal energy, density, matter TEKS: 5.5B, 3.5C Fifth graders are learning all about properties of matter for the next few weeks! We will be talking about the different states of matter and their characteristics, as well as how matter changes from one state to another. We will also be learning about density and how to measure it. In class, we will be doing a few lab activities to explore the different properties of matter and how to measure and observe them. We will take some time to review our units of measurement and how to use various science tools to collect our data. Our scientists will be taking lots of notes in their journals and getting a good "workout" for their science brains. Make sure and ask your student to share their knowledge with you at home! As always, vocab for this unit can be found in "Class Docs." I have also uploaded a template for students to use for their homework assignment.
